Desk:Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-nation tour, beginning with Nigeria, followed by visits to Brazil and Guyana. In Nigeria, PM Modi will be conferred with the prestigious “Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger” (GCON) award. Notably, the only other foreign recipient of this honor was Queen Elizabeth in 1969.
This marks the 17th international honor for PM Modi, having already been recognized by 16 countries for his leadership. On arriving in Nigeria at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PM Modi expressed gratitude and highlighted the importance of the bilateral partnership.
The Ministry of External Affairs, through a post on X (formerly Twitter), announced the Prime Minister’s arrival in Abuja, where Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike warmly received him. PM Modi was presented with the ceremonial “Key to Abuja,” symbolizing the trust and respect of the Nigerian people.
President Tinubu, in a social media post, welcomed PM Modi and emphasized the intent to enhance the strategic partnership between the two nations. In response, PM Modi thanked the President and expressed optimism that the visit would strengthen bilateral ties.
During his interaction, PM Modi praised the Indian community in Nigeria for their heartfelt welcome. He also appreciated the recognition of the Marathi language as a classical language in Nigeria, acknowledging the Marathi diaspora’s dedication to preserving their cultural roots.
This visit aims to expand cooperation in key areas and deepen the strategic bond between India and Nigeria, reflecting a new chapter in their bilateral relations.
