Dhaka: Ever since Sheikh Hasina’s exit from power, life for Hindus in Bangladesh has become increasingly difficult. Extremists have gained influence under the interim government of Mohammad Yusuf. Though direct attacks on Hindus have decreased, threats, harassment, and forced resignations from government jobs persist. Empowered by political support, radical organizations are targeting the Hindu community through violence, social exclusion, and smear campaigns. Reports indicate that extremist groups have launched a ‘Love Trap’ operation, alleging that Hindu men are misleading Muslim women into conversion.
In a fresh wave of anti-Hindu actions, many community members are being removed from government positions either by dismissal or coerced resignation. Hindu professors and teachers, especially at prominent universities, are reportedly being pressured to resign. Recently, Rontu Das, an Assistant Professor in the History Department of Chittagong University, was allegedly forced to step down after receiving death threats. In his resignation letter, which has gone viral on social media, he detailed the discrimination he faced.
Dismissals in Police Force
At the Sharada Police Academy, 252 sub-inspectors, including 91 Hindu trainees, were dismissed on grounds of indiscipline and irregularities. These trainees had been recruited during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. Moreover, on October 20, the pass-out parade for over 60 ASP-rank officers at the academy was canceled, delaying their appointment to government positions.
The ‘Love Trap’ Campaign Against Hindus
To target the Hindu community, extremist groups have launched the ‘Love Trap’ campaign, accusing Hindu men of allegedly luring Muslim women into religious conversion. Posters promoting this narrative have been put up in neighborhoods, urging Muslim women to stay cautious.
Growing Atmosphere of Hostility
The Hindu community claims that a hostile environment is being created against them, costing them jobs and opportunities. However, radical groups argue that Sheikh Hasina’s government previously favored close allies of her Awami League party. With the new government in place, these extremists are reportedly focusing their animosity specifically toward Hindus.
