New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India recently dismissed a report published by Reuters, which alleged that Indian ammunition was being sent to Ukraine. In response, the MEA labeled the report as “fictional and misleading,” stating that the accusations against India were baseless. The ministry clarified that India had not violated any rules.
In its statement, the MEA said, “We have seen the Reuters report. It is based on speculation and contains no truth. The accusations of violations against India are entirely false and mischievous.” The MEA emphasized that India has a clean record when it comes to the export of defense and dual-use materials under its international obligations.
“India fully adheres to its international commitments and maintains a robust legal and regulatory framework for exports. This framework includes a thorough review of all relevant norms, including end-user responsibilities and certificates,” the MEA added, underscoring India’s transparency and responsibility in defense exports, denying any violation of international treaties or agreements.
The MEA referred to the Reuters report as “misleading” and asserted that it misrepresented India’s image.
India’s regulatory framework for defense exports ensures compliance with international laws and agreements, leaving no room for inconsistencies. The MEA reiterated that India’s actions are fully legal and responsible, with no evidence of any irregularities.
Earlier, Reuters had claimed in its report that artillery shells sold by Indian manufacturers had made their way to Ukraine via Europe. According to the report, despite opposition from Russia, India had not intervened in this trade. The report, based on data from customs as well as input from Indian and European officials, alleged that this ammunition export has been ongoing for more than a year, aiding Ukraine’s attacks against Russia. The European countries facilitating the transfer of Indian ammunition to Ukraine were reportedly Italy and the Czech Republic, who have been leading the effort to supply arms to Ukraine.
