New York: Human Rights Watch, an organization working on human rights, slammed the Imran Khan government of Pakistan in its 2021 Global Report. It is said that human rights violations in Pakistan have increased during the tenure of Imran government. The media, political opponents and social organizations were oppressed last year. The government also failed to stop violence against women and religious minorities.
The report condemned the government’s policy on human rights activists and journalists. In this connection, the editor of Don newspaper Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman has been mentioned who was held without bail for six months. While the government has also created a National Accountability Bureau for action against corruption but failed to do anything in this matter.
Pakistan’s continuing assault on political opponents and free expression put the country on an increasingly dangerous course. Free expression is being suppressed there. This sequence has increased to a dangerous extent. Threatening opposition leaders, activists, and journalists who criticise the government is a hallmark of authoritarian rule, not a democracy. No anti-government voice is being heard. These things are in the report written by Brad Adams, Asia director of Human Rights Watch.
The report has raised concerns over violence and discrimination against the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan. It has been said that under the blasphemy law people of the Ahmadiyya community are also being killed.
