We all are so busy in improving our lives and earning money that we don’t have time to look around and do something to improve the devastating condition of the environment. Pollution levels are increasing day by day, the ozone layer is getting depleted, the world is running short on drinking water, and we have been witnessing the extinction of many species. It’s high time that we all should make individual efforts to save our earth.
Here’s how you can be the change this ‘World Environment Day’ and help tackle the climate crisis:
Save water, save earth because every drop counts.
Reduce the use of plastic.
Clean up a local area.
Talk about why littering is harmful and how recycling can help.
Start gifting indoor plants to your beloveds on their celebratory moments.
Ask a local nursery to donate trees, and then plant them around the school/college/workplace etc. as part of your WED celebration.
Stake out an area to start a community garden.
Stand together against increasing deforestation!
Invite people to talk about nature and conservation.
Discuss things like turning off the lights when you leave a room, turning up the AC a few degrees warmer, doing laundry in cold water, and unplugging devices when they’re not being used.
Talk about making energy-efficient choices in the home, such as switching out incandescent bulbs for fluorescent bulbs or LEDs.
Start using organic pesticides and compost for farming purposes instead of chemical pesticides and composts.
Turn old t-shirts into bags. Cut the sleeves off the shirt, and then cut around the inside of the neck. The bits you have left at the top are the handles. Turn the shirt inside-out. Mark a line across the bottom that’s about 4 inches (10 cm) up from the bottom. Cut strips that are 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide by cutting up until you reach the line.
Tie each set of 2 strips together, one each from the front and the back. Then go back and tie each set together by taking one strand from one set and one from the next set and knotting them together. Turn the bag inside-out again.
Choose the green alternative. Choose a bamboo toothbrush instead of a traditional plastic one, ask for no straws when you go out to eat, and take your reusable water bottle instead of picking up a disposable one.
Cut down on paper.
Technology can be a huge helper when it comes to reducing the resources we consume. Sign up for electronic statements for your utility bills, credit cards, and banks. There are numerous free apps that can help you eliminate your paper calendar, notebook, and sticky notes.
Practice precycling. Planning your shopping ahead of time to buy sustainable products and exactly the amount you need — is a great preemptive measure that’s easy to incorporate into your shopping habits!
Calculate your carbon footprint.
Dedicate your blog to World Environment Day on 5 June.
Lobby local authorities to adopt sound environmental policies.
Organic farming/cooking.
Organize puppet shows for children with an environmental message.
Rainwater harvesting.
Use sustainable modes of transportation like walking, jogging, cycling etc.
